Confirmation Day

An Open Letter to Confirmands

Today is your Confirmation Day. A day when you openly declare that you have chosen to live your life with God in it. Do you even know how amazing this is? Most people don’t recognize it when they are first confirmed as a teenager. There is so much that you have yet to experience in life. There will be some tough roads ahead, but God is with you. Today, you are stating that God is your guide. You accept His word and the responsibility of going out, begin His hands and feet on earth. You are confirming that you believe in God as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You are confirming that you will rely upon Him for life.

Today is not the end. Today is just the beginning. Every choice you make from here on out is a decision to step closer or further away from God. Every breath. Every thought. Every action. I give you fair warning that this gets harder and harder as you get older. Life has a way of making God seem further away. American society has taught us that we should live for ourselves, in the moment, forgetting about the world around us. Don’t give into this fallacy. Everything we do affects others, affects our relationship with God.

Many years ago, my pastor shared a demonstration during church. She had another church member come forward and they passed a ball back and forth, the other person started to turn and it became harder and harder to pass the ball. Finally, the other person was turned fully away from the pastor. When the other person tossed the ball, it went wild and the pastor had to stretch and extend to catch it, when the pastor tossed the ball, it bounced off the other person’s back. This is much like our relationship with God. When we focus on God, passing the ball is easy. As we turn away from God, we make life harder and more painful for ourselves. God doesn’t move away from us. When we focus on God, life may not be perfect, but there is a clarity and ease that comes with His presence. When we turn away, life’s bumps are a little bit harder to handle. All it takes is refocusing, and letting God take the pain, the stress from us. The great thing is that he wants to share the joy with us.

Today, my prayer for you is that you never have to feel the sting of turning away from God. That you have mentors that help you to  focus on God and share His love with others. God has a plan for each of us, I pray that you decide to follow His plan for you. Please remember, GOD LOVES YOU!

Peace and Blessings to you,

Melanie
